The Turning Point Academy

Something to think about

"God's gift to you is more talent and ability than you could possibly use in your lifetime.
Your gift to God is to develop as much of your talent and ability as you can in this lifetime."
~ Steve Bow

Excited to be on the cover of next months issue of Upclose Magazines!

Check out the article. Sarah Warburton wrote a great article on the school.

TPA student interview

(download)

After joining us for TPA's 2009 summer leadership training camp, Adelle enrolled as a high school student. She is now preparing for college by taking our enhanced SAT prep course. Adelle has maintained honors and continues to score 4.5 and 5.0's in her subjects. She is taking Chinese for her foreign language credit. She is now in her second half of Chemistry and has almost completed Trigonometry. She has signed up for Dual credit courses in college Government and English Composition I for Summer and Fall 2010. Adelle is on track to graduate with honors and college credit in Spring 2011.
Adelle wishes she would have known about The Turning Point Academy sooner. She was bored in her public school because she had to wait for students in her class to get up to speed while she already grasped the information being taught. Adelle likes that our school is self-paced. She is able to soar through the subjects that she understands and has more time to focus her attention on the subjects that do not come as easy for her.

It would be great to see your comments

TPA's affiliation with ATi teacher training

NBC Channel 2 did a nice story on the Appelbaum Training Institute and they ran it on their 5pm newscast. Here's the great piece they put together on The Turning Point Academy's (TPA's) sister company, the Appelbaum Training Institute.
Because of the 20 plus years of early childhood and K-12 experience in education, TPA has pioneered a new way to educate grades 6-12 high acheiversby combining the best educational methods into one model.
TPA is best described as a private school that is disguised as a home school.

ATiseminars.org, (the largest teacher training organization in the U.S., with a presence in Canada, South America and Asia) The Appelbaums are qualified to provide students with a solid foundation. With thatTPA understands academics and the need for new teaching methods.

Jack Canfield's Success Principles Workshop in Dallas, Tx, Feb. 27, 2010

Carol Appelbaum (left) and Betsy DeVega (right) attended the workshop to gain motivation and to learn from Jack Canfield so they can continue to motivate their students at The Turning Point Academy (Sugar Creek area) and The KnILE Prep Academy (Greatwood area).
We have been assisting our Grades 6-12 students and fostering personal and academic maturity with these success principles, along with other success skills that are taught to business entrepreneurs.

Carol Appelbaum likes to call The Turning Point Academy a "Better Life" school.
When sharing her background it makes sense why she stepped "out of the box" to provide a different education for her daughter after elementary school.

"I do not complain about things, I figure out a plan to do what is needed to create a solution".

As a co-founder of The Appelbaum Training Institute (ATi) with husband, Marty and Mother-in-law, Maryln Appelbaum,
Carol is more than qualified to step up and take on this task.

ATi is known throughout the United States for their powerful learning strategies.

Over 50,000 educators attended their professional development seminars and conferences in 2009.

The Appelbaums have appeared on Channel 2 News

The Appelbaum's authored two Early Childhood Education (ECE) courses used by college undergraduate students

Marty Appelbaum is featured in Chicken Soup for the Teacher’s Soul" (pg. 75).

ATi has been honored to accept three Houston Business Journals "Best Places to Work" awards.

The Appelbaums are qualified to provide students with a solid foundation in education and in leadership skills.

Carol Appelbuam started a school in 2008. The Turning Point Academy (TPA) with the understanding of success skills, academics and the need for new learning methods.

Carol is the driving force behind the TPA, committed to changing the way education is been done in our country. She emphatically agrees with Mortimer Adler who states “Education should be individualized not standardized!”

Her goal is for The Turning Point Academy, to be the model school for how all children are educated in this new century.

There were a lot of things in Carol's life that were difficult for her to deal with, like most kids, she had no control over them. At the "Success Principles Workshop", Jack Canfield described his story and it really resonated. Carol realized it described why she has the extra compassion and empathy toward teens today. Growing up she had learned to be hyper visual and sensitive. To notice every little thing. Carol easily sees through the barriers and walls that disguise the insecurities of teens today.

Carol understands that success is a learned behavior and feels compelled to provide daily success skills so teens have the advantages they need in higher education taking them into the global workforce.

Knowing what she wanted for her daughter's education,
Carol began to think...
what if there was a school that offered Grades 6-12 students a platform to grow beyond limits with like minded teens who are being guided to implement and use vital success principles daily at school. For teens to get a head start in the newer way of being successful in the NEW ever changing global workforce, being assisted to set grand goals and learning there isn't anything wrong with reaching high. In fact, it doesn't take anymore effort than it takes to dream small.

There are many parents who share in this idea of a different education. It is my purpose in life to reach out to those parents and let them know there is an alternative in education.

Meet with Carol at the next OPEN HOUSE Events planned:

March 22,  See our students working on success principles and the on-line curriculum.

April 22, To learn about the "brain based" curriculum that TPA prides itself on.

"World's Fastest Reader" visits TPA

Howard Berg, "The World's Fastest Reader" visited The Turning Point Academy (TPA) on November 16, 2009. TPA uses Howard Berg’s speed reading course (see bottom of TPA's homepage). Using his techniques, students learn to filter through massive amounts of information with better retention. Mr. Berg taught TPA students how to use speed reading as a powerful advantage in school, work, and in life. The students were very excited to have Mr. Berg join them. They have successfully used his speed reading for over a year. The students have watched him on "FOX NEWS" reading President Obama's proposed Health Care Plan (nearly 2000 pages in one hour). Howard Berg is also on the Sony Reader Digital commercial with Justin Timberlake.   and http://www.collegeplus.org/blog/2009/10/26/speedreadingstudyskills .

Howard Berg and Dr. Kuni Beasley created the NEW American School curriculum. This is the curriculum that TPA students follow with great success. With consistent effort and attendance students make great progress in learning. Ciara Appelbaum is 13 and entering the 10th grade level. Michael Dale is 11 and would be in the 5th grade if he were in public school. He has accomplished a great deal in his first year at TPA. He will be finished with Middle School and entering High School courses by Jan. 2010. This is just two examples. TPA is very proud of each student for their daily progress and self motivation.

Do you shake your head at today’s statistics in education?

§   28% of High School seniors can't read

§  38% of High School seniors can't do simple math

§  90% of High School graduates can't write a reasonably coherent paragraph

§  1/3 of 17 year olds couldn't place France on a world map

§  Almost 90% of high school seniors are NOT ready for college

§  Up to 70% of students who enroll in college will not graduate within

6 years of their enrollment

Shaking your head at today’s statistics in education doesn’t solve anything.

The Turning Point Academy has proven techniques that have overcome this crisis, "buck" the disturbing educational trends, and offers a break-through to the academic norms.

Provide your grades 6-12 children the private school that will maximize their intellectual potential at a fraction of the cost.

The ideal learning environment for teens today

The ideal learning environment for teens today

An evolved look at grades 6-12

Genius ideas and abilities are available to all students.  It's all there in the rapidly expanding library of today’s technology.  Now students can be surrounded by potential, creation, and possibilities…a greater mind….a vaster collective knowledge base. Technology is expanding infinitely and it is crucial for today’s student’s to benefit from all that technology has to offer.

While 20th century regular, mind-oriented learning was done over long periods of time through memorization and disciplined routines, 21st century evolved learning is done moment to moment with a sense of joy and adventure all within a comprehensive structure.  In the new, 21st century, evolutionary learning environment, students are empowered to:

  • Connect to know anything they want to know
  • Access their  potential and creativity as energetic states that open up limitless possibilities and highly creative endeavors
  • Celebrate their uniqueness and generate their own unique creative genius in whatever areas they're passionate about
  • Experience greater joy and empowerment as they learn

The old 20th century learning model fails to address 21st century challenges and opportunities.  Today’s teens need to have an advantage as they mature and enter higher education and then the global work force. The generation that will build the future deserves to be exposed to a more expansive kind of learning.

Fortunately, this evolution in learning isn’t some distant dream for the future.  It is taking place right now at the top-of-the line school, Turning Point Academy (TPA), located in the Houston area.  Students at TPA quickly access and utilize the grandest libraries of up to date information via the Internet to gain enormous amounts of knowledge in all school subjects.   They take joy in learning in this evolutionary environment.  They acquire leadership skills, write daily affirmations, set goals, learn to plan in detail, and execute their plans. They conduct morning meetings in a board room setting as a daily learning process, and use the latest technology as part of their learning.

One of the highlights for TPA students is to have the opportunity to complete all of their school work each day so that when they go home in the evenings, they have NO HOMEWORK! With homework out of the evening equation, students are free from stress and have the opportunity to spend more time doing other activities.  In the evenings, students are free to engage in sports, music, theatre, or spend quality time with families.

The Turning Point Academy is ideal for the sensitive and multi-sensory students of today. The atmosphere is comfortable, quiet, and conducive to their focus, creativity and individuality.   The academy is located in an educator’s large school-home. It’s a luxurious private school environment like none other.  Unlike 20th century learning institutions, students receive the daily personal one-on-one attention they deserve.  The student body is small in number, yet just right to foster positive social interactions, discussions, and collaboration among peers.

TPA has a zero tolerance for negative behaviors eliminating that stress from students. Students in a stress-free, distraction-free environment are able to become clear on their purpose and not be influenced by negative peer pressure. They are able to get more educational benefits when they can focus and stay clear on their objectives. TPA students are primed to take dual high school and college credits. When they are ready to enter college they will enter in their college sophomore year. TPA students earn high GPA’s, SAT and ACT scores and are eligible to receive academic scholarships. These advantages reduce families financial worries during the expensive college years.

The Turning Point Academy provides the ideal learning environment. The 'fit-the-norm' approach no longer applies to the teens of today.  A creative, dynamic learning approach celebrating the unique potential of every single person is required for the 21st century.

Every person on this planet needs to make a contribution and pursue their most wondrous dreams and visions. Now is the time! The Turning Point Academy is the place for your grades 6-12 child.
